Various glass filter for use with color slide or color negative film and digital cameras:
- UV-Filter, Skylight filter
- Polarizing filter
- Graduated filter neutral gray
In addition to the filters menshioned above you should always use a suitable lens hood to reduce the scattered light.
UV-Filter (Ultraviolet filter):
In strong sunlight (eg, in the mountains or at the sea) and clear air, a UV or skylight filter is essential. It reduces the blueness (sky is mostly unnatural blue ink) caused by UV radiation and also reduces slightly the blur caused by haze.
The Ultraviolet filter has no impact on the exposure metering.
Polarizing filter:
The polarizing filter enhances the color saturation and reduces haze. The effect can be infinitely adjusted in intensity by rotating the polarizing filter. The use of a polarizing filter only makes sense at an angular to the subject incident sunlight.
There exist two types of polarizing filters:
- Linear polarizing filter
- Circular polarizing filter
The Cirkular polarizing filter has a much more uniform distribution of brightness in the photoimage comparing to the linear polarizing filter and is therefore first choice. Unfortunately, it is much more expensive :o((
Originally, the polarizing filter was used for attenuating of interfering reflections on shiny objects. The polarizing filter also reduces undesirably the beautiful glitter of the sea in the sunlight, making in some cases highlights blunt. Therefore, the filter effect be dosed exactly !
Depending on the effect of the polarizing filter arise 1-3 aperture light loss.
The polarizing filter can therefore only be used on cameras with metering through the lens (TTL - Through the Lens). Caution by digital cameras and small viewfinder cameras, SLR cameras have always TTL metering.
Graduated filter neutral gray:
| Big differences in brightness (more than 6 aperture steps), eg between heaven and earth (foreground and background) for landscape photos can be reduced by inserting a neutral gray gradient filter. The picture quality is preserved full.
The effort is really worthwhile only at medium or large format cameras or high-value digital cameras with more than 16 megapixels. |
All mentioned filters are offered in top quality by the company Heliopan in Graefelfing near Munich in all standard sizes.
Phototip: Buy filter only once in the largest size needed and adapt with an intermediate ring on the lenses with a smaller connection threads. Pay attention to vignetting with super wide angle lenses !
